DICKY DELL & THE BING BONGS aka THE BING BONGS aka THE TROYS

In 1958 Michael J. Rampino with some friends formed the vocal group The Troys (Name derived from The street corner they first started to sing on in Brooklyn NY. The corner of Troy ave and Schenectady boulevard). they recorded two songs and presented them to the record label Dragon records.

The record label liked the two songs, and thinking that the first one could be a success with another leading voice, they called a singer named Dicky Dell to re-record it with the group.

At the end of 1958 Dragon records  published the two songs under the name of Dicky Dell & The Bing Bongs for the A side 'Ding-A-Ling-A-Ling-Ding-Dong' and only as The Bing Bongs for B side 'The Cling'.

In 1959 the manager of the group sold the demos of those two songs originally recorded by The Troys to the Okeh label released them this year.

The Young Ideas are featured in all the doo wop music guides with their 1959 recording for Sawn records, but they don't have a doo wop sound "Touchdown" is an instrumental side and "Dream" is a Teen song without a doo wop sound.

This time there is an error present in the two books that I have "The Complete Book of Doo Wop" and "Jeff Kreiter Vocal Group Record Guide".

THE PENNDULUMS.

-Times Marches On / Masquerader. May records-1961.

Value; $200.

Until today, on any website or YouTube I have not been able to see a photo of this 45 rpm and I also see that most of the references about this group do so with the misspelled name "PEN" instead of "PENN" and is that surely this 45 had never been seen, a rarity of white doowop groups.

This blog present to you four pictures of the group THE VISIONS that recorded in 1964 for Coed records.

Click on the photos to see them in a large size.

They are four rare photos, difficult to see of this little-known group, since there is no information or photograph on them on the doo wop and Rock & Roll sites or YouTube.

As you can see in one of these photos, the names of the members of the group are Johnny, Jimmy, Danny, Mickey and Andy.

They are present in the doo wop guides as ...

The Visions Featuring Johnny Rodia.

-Down In My Heart / Tell Her Now.Coed records-1964.

In many places these recordings are attributed to another group with the same name of THE VISIONS these from Cleveland, Ohio that recorded for labels such as Warwick records (see in this blog The Visions) but that is not correct and surely the confusion came from using the two groups, the same name, which led many collectors to think that the two were the same group.

SCOTT GARRETT with THE MYSTICS

Scott Garrett was left on the steps of a church in Pittsburgh when he was six months of age. Then he was adopted by a religious family and as a teenager he was sent to different religious schools so that in the future he could be ordained a priest there he began to sing in the choirs.

At the age of 22 and with the explosion of the Rock & Roll music, Scott abandoned his religious career and moved to Washington where he would be part of Roger Mendez's band, there he was discovered by DJ Milton Q. Ford who signed him for his radio progam.

A late year he moved to New York where with the help of Elise Britton (a composer and singer with Ray Charkes and Perry Como) got a contract for Laurie records where in January 1959 he would record the songs "A House of Love" / "So Far so Good"(with vocal accompaniments by Elise)followed in May of this same year of "Love Story / Graduation Souvenirs" in this recording he is accompanied by the white group The Mystics (Below photo).

Due to the low promotion of his recordings by Laurie records (who at that time was focused on promoting groups like Dion & the Belmonts or The Mystics) his songs were heard very little and he was soon forgotten by the music industry falling into oblivion.

Only the last recording for Laurie records is present in the doo wop music guides.
