THE CASINOS...Name, Terry and Fraternity records

In 1958 The Casinos of_Then You Can Tell Me Goodbye. fame were know as The Legends (top and bottom photos) consisted of J. T. Sears (Lead), Ray White (Vocal and Guitar), Roger West (Tenor) and Jack Kenneddy. They started in the Woodward high school in Cincinnati, Ohio and played in local nightclubs, record hops and street corners Soon after, Gene Hughes was invited to join the group.


They signed Carl Dopkins Jr. as their manager he changed his name to The Casinos and in the summer of 1958 recorded for an independet label, Name Records, the sides_Do You Recall  / Teacher. with J.T. Sears on lead the record was reissued in 1960 on Olympic and in 1964 on Itzy Records with different versions of the Name's songs.

The A side have a ocal airplay and the group perfomed on Dick Clark's "Caravan of Stars" when this celebrate his show in Cincinnati.


After this recording, the group underwent several changes (which would be a constant from now on). Jack Kennedy left  and was replaced by Joe Patterson, shortly after Roger West left for military service and the group was innactive until 1964 when recorded two singles for Terry Records...

 -Gee Whiz / Lovely One.

 -Too Good To Be True / That's The Way. (Later reissued on Airtown records)

In this time only two original members are present in the group Hughes and White.


In  1965 the group signed with Fraternity records where in late 1966 recorded the national hit (#6) "Then You Can Tell Me Goodbye". In this recording the members were Gene Hughes, Ray White, Bobby Amstrong and Mickey Denton with a five man band.


In the doo wop guides only two Fraternity's recordings are mentioned...

-Then You Can Tell Me Goodbye / I Still Love You.

-Please Love Me / When I Stop dreaming.

JERRY PAUL & THE PLEBES aka JERRY PAUL

Gerald Paul "Jerry" Hirshberg  was an American automotive designer, industrial designer  and president of Nissan Design International since the late 60s until is death in 2019 but in his teenager years he formed his doo wop group Jerry Paul & The Plebes in the Ohio state University.

He sang the lead voice and play guitar.


The group recorded as...

 Jerry Paul & The Plebes.

As Jerry Paul.

-Sparkling Blue / I Want Back My Ring. Great records-1959.

-Oh Boy / Step Out. Holiday records-1960.

The Jerry Paul & The Pebles songs are not available on YouTube, but I have heard them and their song "I'll Be True" is a ballad with a White vocal group sound.





BOBBY & THE ORBITS aka BOBBY GRAYSON & THE ORBITS

Band based out of Huntington, Long Island, NY consisted of Bobby Groccia (lead guitar and vocals), Joe Boccia (drums), Joe Di Bartolo (bass guitar) and Bobby's sister Mary Jane  (accordion and vocals).

The Kid Miguel Poventud from Guayama in Puerto Rico recorded in 1957 two Frankie Lymon classic tunes in spanish for Embassy records with the accompaniment of the the vocal group Los Menores (The Minors)

In the Kreiter's doo wop book appear mentioned one recording "Your Smallest Tear / Sleepy Town Blues" of the country famale singer Peggy Upton in 1957 for Rose records.


No reference appears on the internet about this recording or any photo of the 45 rpm or song on youtube.


If anyone has them please write me as I would like to know if this recording has a doo wop sound or is a failure of the mentioned book.

WHITE DOO WOP ACETATE...The Pharoahs

Rare acetate recorded by Lyn Best and Frank Amadeo as The Pharoahs with the side "My Girl" in 1957, but never released.


In 1958 Lynn and Frank as members of The Four Imperials (see in this blog) recorded this song for Chant records.

REVIVAL YEARS...DAVE ANTRELL

The physician, singer and song writer David Antrobus aka Dave Antrell is known for singing all the vocal parts in his creations for the Sacto and Antrell record labels.


He started in 1973 recording his voice in four parts for Sacto records such as The Five Arcades with the songs "Ruby Lee" and "Hoping You'll Fall in Love" (The last released as The 5 Arcades).

In 1985 he formed his own record label Antrell records where he recorded as Little Flaytus & The Dreamaires "Buy a Van / Forever in Love.

In 1988, he signed for Classic Artist records as a songwriter, musician and vocal assistant on some group recordings.


Dave died February 23, 1995 of liver failure (age 46) near Valencia, California.

"So High" is a good rocking song with chorus by a female group,  date of this recording is unknown for me.
