According to doo wop music expert, Gerry Diez, this vinyl from the Continentals is one of the rarest  white vocal group recordings with a price of 3,000 dollars.

The Continentals And The Counts Of Rhythm.

-Hey Senorita  / Don't Leave Me. Muncie records - 1958.

LISTEN ...

This is the known story of this recording ...

In 1958, the doowop sound became more and more powerful and attracted the attention of the teenagers, and that is how five students from the Muncie Central High School in Indiana (Theotis Barnes, Phil Butts, Ralph Kersey, Ray Jimmerson and Elsworth Williams) decided to form a vocal group under the name The Continentals, after several weeks of rehearsals they brought together a band of school musicians (The Counts Of Rhythm; Jim Cox, Roy Alexander, and Bud Cole) and moved to Cincinnati to record a 45 rpm paid for themselves.

They recorded the Penguin´s song "Hey Senorita" and on the flip side "Don't Leave Me" the boys only had money to make 100 copies that were finally distributed locally in Indiana and its surroundings.

As you can read this is a private recording without any record label, but in Jeff Keiter's doo wop guide it appears under the label "MUNCIE" which is actually the group's hometown.

BUT...

Actually this is a black vocal group (see the above photo) maybe the confusion is due to the fact that their song "Don't Leave Me" has a white sound.

Yesterday I uploaded a new song on my YouTube channel (I think it was not on YouTube) by a white group that  recorded in 1964 for the Rich-Rose label.

For my taste it is a good white doo wop ballad, you can listen to it by visiting ...

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCa883z9Zi_5-6Yul5UMe20A

Surely it belongs to the same group that recorded on this same record label as Tommy Burk & the Counts, look at them here ...

BORROWED DOO WOP

BORROWED MUSIC;

Take and use a little part of the melody or lyrics that appear in a previously published song.

In doo wop music we have several examples of songs with borrowed lyrics or melodies, perhaps the most famous being "I Wonder Why" by Dion & The Belmonts with parts taken from The Legends song "Now I'm Telling You" and The Keynotes "I Don't Know".

In this post I present another example of these songs surely not well known to collectors.

THE TEARDROPS "Bidge of Love" 1957.

THE REGENTS "Liar" 1961.

From the Complete Book of Doo wop...

-The Jaguars "I Could If I Would / Big Noise. Janet records-1959.

This group really is made up of country singers and brothers Bud and Willie G. Brewster (they recorded like the Brewster brothers).

In 1959, with the popularity of Rock & Roll sound, they decided to record an 45 rpm in this style on the record label Janet records in Manchester, KY, where they recorded the sides "I Could If I Would / Big Noise". side A has Bud as lead voice and on the other side they added a friend as lead voice Harold Harper. These songs were released under the name of The Jaguar's.

Of course they don't have a doo wop sound instead the side "I Could If I Would"  is a good Rock & Roll song.

Anthony Scolaro...THE SERENES

Last May Anthony Scolaro of The Serenes from New York city died,  this is a name, a group that says nothing to anyone and that is why I take advantage of this post to pay tribute to those singers who were in a group, but who were not lucky enough to have a success andfor this reason today to be recognized and surely many of those singers are unaware that many people in a year as far away as this 2020 enjoy their doo wop performances that they sang 60 years ago.

THE SERENES "Telephone, Telephone".
